The 1987-88 Bismarck Century Team is Bar none the best Team in North Dakota History.... Bismarck later did become the number one team in the nation but I really believe Century paved the way for that later 1992 recognition.
Century Team won the prestigious Christmas tourney by over 100 pts. The largest ever christmas tourney winning margin.
They also hold the state record with 13 weight classes having 9 in the state finals and scoring 299 points..... Yes 299 points the would have scored over 300 if Mike Seeger wouldn't have gotten hurt.
The team consisted of 103 Mike Seeger - State champ later and 3 time NAIA national Champ 112- Trang Doan- 3 time state placer 119- Monte Trusty - Multi State Champ NAIA National Champ 125- Troy Steiner - Multi State Champ 4time NCAA div I all-american and National Champ plus alot more 130 - Terry Steiner Multi State Champ- 3X All-American Div I National Champ, Coach of the 2004 Olympics Female Wrestling Team 135- Trent Gillis- Multi placer 140- Mike McCormick- State Champ - NCAA II All-American 145- Karsten McCullom- State Champ 152- Jon Gums Multi placer- State Champ 160- Karl Lembke- State Finalist NAIA All American 171- Dean Milky 189- John Korwin - State Champion- one of the most feared wrestlers his double leg would kill most people. Hwt- Ted Cash multi placer state finalist.
I could ask Gabe for more if he had time.

Anyone remember Cody Anderson from Lisbon. Cody was a 3 time state champ(94, 95, 96). He kicked the nuts
out of everyone. Another one to mention is Kris Nelson from Lisbon. Kris was a 2 time state champ(94, 95). Kris later went on to win a National Championship with the Bison and his senior season, was named Outstanding wrestler at the Nationals. Those in my mind were 2 solid wrestlers.

I Agree with most of what you said but I do not agrre with today's wrestlers being as dedicated . There is a handful that are but for a majority of kids today they are not as in to it as 80's and 90's. Matpac kids went everywhere and matpac had a reputation around the nation. I f you go to the national tournaments today as I do. You can mention Matpac and few know of it. I have been apart of practices on the high school and college level these past 4 years and it is pathetic how many of the kids are there to be baby sitted.

class a or b doesn't matter if your real tough and keep improving in college......Gary hoffman 2 time national champion from ashley, the huck brothers, from new salem national champions/look at labor at u mary/Pazdernick/mike weber etc //I liked the Sabots/steiners/trusty/Mark slatter --Hwt 3 time state champ-and pro football player/presently travis lang/ryan stockert/sebelius?sp w fargo/Ben imd**e
-linton/and irmen-carrington and i could go on///i don't compare a or b //I look at the wrestler because as the rotary tournament as proved/if class a and b were held together/some class a teams would end up in 29th 40th or 50th place ratter than 17 or last. In the past some class a teams had better coaching that is mostly no longer the case.

Yeah that century team was the best/I can see by the names and remember them well......In 1981 bismarck barely beat napoleon at the rotary/and napoleon was missing their 185 pound wrestler that placed second in state/they placed 11 of 12 wrestlers at state and scored 185 points a record that still stands/at that tournament they beat both south dakota's state champs a and b...redfield the south dakota state b champion placed 4th and rapid city took 3rd/redfield too scored the most class b points ever at their state tournament/ a record that also still stands/in my opinion that was the best class b team to date, in a tournament that was not bracketed and wrestled only to 6th place and not received the almost free 7th and 8th place points, a bracketed tournament would have benefited that great team/

Napoleon was great in 1981 but they had no competition while Carrington was beating a very good Watford City team by over 30 points at the State Tournament. The only team that would have beat Carrington in 1987 was Century but we didn't wrestle in the Rotary back then. List some of the names from that 81 Napoleon team and maybe we can compare a little bit. I know its impossible to say who was the best for sure but it is sure fun to argue about it. Here is a list of Carrington's team. 98-Bruce Miller 105-Jason Rodacker 112-Mike Peterson 119-Lawrence Straley 126-Jeremy Wolf 132-Pat Paulson 138-Lance Koenig 145-Tyrone Rosenau 155-Jason Wagner 167-Steve Copenhavor 185-Dennis Freeman HWT-Rich Poehls

I know a lot of the guys from the 87 carrington team and I think Jason Wagner was really good but as a whole I Know Century would have handed them their rear. Century was unbeleivable those years

I was still young when Napoleon dominated the 1981 tourney, so I don't remember everyone, but the team included Rick and Kyle Scherr, Duane and David Sperle, Darwin Dewald, Greg Wald. Can't say how they would have stacked up against that outstanding Carrington team, but I think they certainly dominated the season like no other Class B team has. David Sperle couldn't even get a spot on varsity until his senior year, and he was a state runner-up. They took all twelve wrestlers to state (all twelve in the regional finals, I believe). Eleven placed, with the twelfth being an overtime loss away from placing.

I agree Century would have beat Carrington but I also think we had a good shot to win at least 4 or 5 matches if the teams would have duled. I am just saying that 87 Carrington team was one of the best class B teams ever and we would have beaten most class A.

There have been many talented wrestlers from North Dakota. Please read this quote from the origninal post and then comment.
From the beginning of time who is the most dominating wrestler from North Dakota, who would you least like to meet on the mat and why. There are a lot of talented individuals to pick from. I think this can be an interesting post. please reply

I really don't remember anyone being that scary when I wrestled but I remember watching Troy Sabot and people were scared of him and now you have both Mellmer and Lang but personally if I were in these guys weight class I would love to wrestle them, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain.
