There are many great wrestling coaches, both A and B, around the state and it's tough to name just one. But you have to look at what they do with what they have. I'd have to vote for Jon Nelson of Mandan. It's his first year and basically taken the same wrestlers and moved them at least to the middle of the pack in the western region. No doubt in a couple of years under his guidance that Mandan will be right up there with the rest of them.

If one views the purpose of H.S. sports is defined as winning only, I suppose Coach McCleary is successful. In my opinion, winning is far behind other purposes.
Learning disipline, sportsmanship, grace in defeat, in short, learnng to be a man-these are the true purposes of prep sports. In these far more important categories, Barry McCleary is a disgrace to the sport. If the coach of my son's team made a display such as McCleary did at the Lisbon Tournament, I would be in the superintendents office on Monday morning asking for his dismissal.

Could I get all of your attention for a just a moment? If you didnt notice the name of this thread its "Best ND Coaches" The Key word being BEST. Now what most of you are typing doesnt sound like support. So you can take you negativity to a different subject. If you want write bad things about McCleary or any other coach you should start a new topic were that is the subect, and ReadytoRumble Im not sure how your big story that will stay in your mind forever had anything to do with this thead. Once again "Best ND Coaches" it should be used to build up not tear down.

In my opinion Mylo Trustee is the best coach from North Dakota. He has been instrumental in developing the best talent from our state. He is a motivator, when a wrestler is down, He knows exactly what to say to the wrestler. His record speaks for itself.
Other coaches that I hold in high regard are Knowlen, Schumacher, Gabriel, White, Michaelsons, Beckman, McCleary, newcomer Oleson from killdeer. Sorry if I left any out. There are many committed coaches involved in the sport of wrestling.

Mike Norland of Velva (6 state titles) and Howard (Buck) Anderson (won coach of the Year in both A & B) were two great coaches!

You guys are forgeting Randy Burwick of Hettinger. He doesn't qualify for one of ND's Best Coaches. Come on!! Look what he's done with a program like Hettinger. Plus look at what he did in his wrestling career. Please, just give him a little credit.
I big fan!

Coach wrestling is not all about state championships, and win-loss records. It's also about helping kids better themselves. Coach Dixon-Belcourt opens his program up to any one who is willing to come in, and he does an excellent job making sure that they leave with a better attitude and focus than when they came in. That's what makes a great coach.

Alot of my son's accomplishments have come from Milo, then his High school guru's (Scott & Jeff)

Jeff Schumacher is the best coach that I have ran into and is well known for his abilities throughout the Midwest. He has showed his talents at all levels.

First I would like to say that I do not condone what MCcleary did at the Lisbon tourney. But if that is all that you people can come up with to put this man down come on. McCleary I believe came to Napoleon 1981 sine then there has been 7 state titles and numerous state champs and hundreds of placers. One thing you all miss also how many kids from Napoleon have been academically inelegible or inelegible from drugs or alcohol in the past 22 years. I bet you could put them on 3 fingers. Look at programs in Hettinger, Carrington, New Salem every year they have top prospects get kicked off for one thing or another. Does this not reflect at all on the coaching staff. I mean no disrespect towards Mr. Beckman, Randy or Mark. How many of you Fathers out there could coach your son let alone 5 boys on the team. I know I could not without ever saying or doing something that upset a ref or crowd. Hell the school board in Napoleon tried to get rid of McCleary years ago but thatmeant they would lose the kids. Mr. Mrs. McCleary have devoted their lives to Napoleon Wrestling. Look at the Napoleon program I think there is 80 kids in the school and no co-op. BHS probably has 100 per grade and I bet BHS would not hurry to wrestle NHS in A dual. Sorry for the long rant but you should know the individual before you pass judgenebt. I have not always agreed with his decisions but I have always respected him.
