Just wondering who you guys thought the best North Dakota wrestling coaches are and were. This is for both current and past coaches.

My vote for the present would be for Barry McCleary. He has taken the Napoleon team and brought them to the #1 state individual and dual title holders. That takes a lot of hard work, dedication to all the wrestlers on the team as well his own family.
My vote for the past would be Al Larson from Carrington

don't just tell us who you think should be the best ND coaches, tell us why, obviously if they have your vote there is a good reason, and that reason deserves to be told!!! if i coach really is great he deserves just as much credit/acknowledement as an outstanding wrestler

After watching Coach McCleary's behavior at the Lisbon tournament this weekend.......he hardly falls under the title "Best Coaches" He may have a wonderful team......However, the inappropriate gesture he gave the fans was WAY OUT OF LINE for a coach!!

What kind of gestures did coach mccleary make to the fans? My vote actually goes to two individual coaches....Blair Kelley and Justin Decoteau. Blair, has built himself a nice jr. high program and helps out with the freestlye programs throughout the year. Justin, although not coaching this year, has helped turn around the Minot Ryan program and has also helped many freestyle programs in the past. Both of these young coaches are instrumental in develping North Dakota Wrestling.

It is not a surprise to hear McCleary at it again. Every time you turn around he is griping at the ref's, fans, who ever will listen to his whining. When we talk about sportsmanship in this state, how can we expect our wrestlers to be sportsmanlike when their coach is the worst one? My vote goes to Jeff Schumacher and Scott Knowlen, both of these guys have been around wrestling and coaching a long time and know what it takes to get it done..proven record.

Schumaker, Knowlen, Zehren, Fisher, and Speiss.... Speiss really turned the fargo north wrestling program around (mainly with the spladle) Schumaker and knowlen have created a dynasty that will likely never ever collapse, i dont know if i will ever know of 2 better coaches than these 2. Zehren and Fisher have completely turned the jamestown wrestling program around. Fisher starts them out with the fundamentals with the jamestown taz, and does a great job on recruiting kids... and Zehern mentally trains better than anyone ive ever known.

people that come to mind from the past include jerry helmrast BHS, mike schaff also BHS, and don kolsricke?sp Minot, won many consecutive championships in minot then went to Arizona to build one of the best programs in the country---Intrestingly enough, some of minnesota's best teams are coached by ND x-wrestlers like apple valley/frazee/st. micheals etc.///in class b--i think of mike norland velva/bert gumms napoleoan/and storhaug lisbon///present coaches i like are knowln/schumacher, and certainly..michealson fron DHS,I like their attitudes///also like gabriel

There are a number of good wrestling coaches in the state of ND: Bismarck High - Scott Knowlen, Jeff Schumacher, Brad Stoltenow, Lance Potter, (Scott & Jeff are the driving force for BHS, but behind every program are great assistants) I dont know what else has to be said of proven track records, they and the program are winners. Dickinson High - Dave Michaelson - Each and every year he has come up with good teams that are always in the running. Century High - former head coach Gabriel. A proven winner. Coach McCleary from Napoleon another winning program and Coach Burwick always has his teams winning and in the running. These are my top 5 in this order. I have to note there are alot of good coaches that have made their impact in this state such as: Gene Krebs, Derrick Dixon, Bruce Moe

i think ron gadberry is one of the best coaches north dakota has seen in the history of wrestling. he introduced and pushed for the state dual tournament. he also started the wrestling program in hillsboro and turned it into a high state placing team.

Most people will chose a coach who they have personally been coached by as their choice for the best coach. A kid from Hettinger will pick someone he personally knows, a kid from Larimore will pick someone he personally knows...yadda, yadda, yadda. The best coaches usually have these similar characteristics: Looking for the best in each of his athletes, not 'talking down' to them, and using positive reinforcements instead of negative ones.

Mr. McCleary is definitely a winning coach if you take into consideration what he has done in Napoleon. He has consistently produced many State Champions, and knows his stuff. I have had the opportunity to watch him on many occasions, and my first impression of him is one that will be stuck in my head forever...giving a referee heck over some calls that he thought were unfair to his son, Kevin during a match at the Fargo Open when Kevin was still in Elementary School. The opponent was my son. I have continued over the years to watch in amazement as he continues this behavior. I have seen him at two tournaments this year, Carrington and Lisbon. At both he was whining, and as most of you know, was asked to leave the arena in Lisbon for arguing with a ref. I do believe that Napoleon ended up winning both of those Tournaments. Mr. McCleary is defintely doing something right--his teams continue to dominate Class B wrestling. It's just too bad that he isn't earning much respect along the way from coaches, fans and refs. Do his own wrestlers respect him?Winning the respect of others is just as important as winning the matches in my opinion.

All you guys talk about is all those coaches that allready have the good teams. When you talk about a good coach, you need to look at what the coach has done during the years where the team wasn't the greatest. Randy Burwick and Theo Schalesky from Hettinger should be right up there in the top coaches catagory. They took a average wrestling program in the early 90's and made it into a state championship team from 1996 to now!!! They never had alot of talent some of those kids they had, but they had pure guts and pure heart!!! I wrestled for them from 1995-2000. I was a seventh grader when I made my first state tourney. I wouldn't have done that or done what I did for my highschool wrestling team if it wasn't for those two guys. I ended up winning 167 career matches for them and I owe it all to them. As far as I'm concerned, they are what every wrestler should ask for in a coach. A coach that goes out of their way for you, just to make sure you get what your out to achieve. Thanks Watch out for the Black Devils come State Tourney Time.

But look at Napoleon they have had a good share of years were they didnt have an awsome team. But McCleary has always turned them around. 1999 and 2000 the called their team the young guns because they were senior less w/ one junior and all the sophmores and freshmen and 8th graders that were on that team now make the team of the present, and napoleon owes alot of their success to the coaching.
