As a parent and a wrestling fan, I was ashamed to read the article in the Bismarck Tribune last friday regarding a hazing incident. I am also sickened to know that a "coach" adult did nothing to help this child. If a wrestler would violate any school law (ie:drinking) he is out for 6 weeks. These young men were slapped on the hand. I am sickened to know that 2 of these criminals were "state champions" in my state of ND.

actually there was only one state champ, between the others there was a 6th place finish and a 2nd place finish. I dont think that the coach was able to know what was going on. Its very hard to see and keep track of wrestlers when it is dark. I am still proud to be a part of North Dakota wrestling, they did something wrong and was punished for it.

"MonofSons", Do you believe every thing you read or hear? Journalists are famous for sensationalism, it sells papers not necessarily the truth. You must believe in Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy too. I hope your children are not home schooled!!!!
Very Proud ND Wrestler

I also am a great big fan of North Dakota Wrestling. Not only when my son is wrestling, but I also give any other wrestlers that I know are training hard and giving the sport their 100% effort their due. I always come up to the wrestlers that I feel are trying hard and give them my appreciation and a pat on their backs. I have tried to keep this issue a positive one, but I have been approached by many out of state people after a story or info on this matter. I do not give anyone info that will hurt our state or the sport. Since I was not in the bus myself, I feel I cannot give anyone accurate info on the situation. I feel a portion of hazing or as I call it initiation goes on in all high school & college sports. Where you draw the line on how far it goes is the responsibility of the other athletes & the coaches if they are present. If the situation went too far, the people involved should be dealt with, then the issue needs to go away.

My son was on this bus. I asked him what happened. He told me that the individual appeared to be a willing participant. I do not condone this type of behavior. I have been both on the giving and recieving end and so has my son of this type of treatment.
It didn't stop either of from graduating from high school or cause psychological trauma affecting the rest of our lives. If this young man developed serious problems affecting the rest of his life, I think we need to look a little closer to home. I know both parents and the boy in question. I feel there are more issues are influencing this situation.
The young men guilty of this have punished by the people empowered by us. Whether it is just punishment, who knows? We can't judge these young men on this incident, there have been many other incidents that have occurred that have not resulted in a lawsuit. I believe if the parents had true concern for their child and not monetary gain, or revenge it would not have come to this.
North Dakota has developed a reputation of developing talented wrestlers and good citizens. This situation will not change that.

Can somebody tell me what this "incident" was? I'm out in Wisconsin now, and I haven't heard about it. E-mail me at krusedog3@aol.com, if you would. Thank you.

well i think that this whole matter is a huge joke, oh big deal, and i think that the article that was in the trib was stupid too. the parents of this kid are obviously really stupid, that is the gayest thing i have ever heard of. north dakota wrestling is great and that matter has nothing to do with it. that stuff hapens all the time and its not a big deal. i feel sorry for gabriel, his name was tarnished because of the acticle, the man is a great coach. and i think that the kid is just a screw up and his easy way out was to say that it was psycological problem. what a frieking joke

The fact that you said "this is the gayest thing i've ever heard of" obviously shows that you know nothing about what you're saying. Does that mean that this story is attracted to other stories of the same sex??? And if that's not "what you mean" then don't use the phrase "gay" to imply anything that it doesn't really mean!! I don't know the story about the incident, but this kinda stuff doesn't happen all the time because some schools have rules about that stuff. Gabriel has not been tarnished, but the wrestling program there has.

What they did was definatly not cool... and was going overboard for an "initiation"... but i dont think everyone should condone "initiations" completely. I think that if the team does the initiation to ALL the freshman... or whomever... that it helps to bring the freshman together more, as a team, cause they are all going through the same thing, and they can learn to help each other, and be there for each other... which i think is the best recipe for a really good team, in any sport.
