Minot Daily News writes:
-------------------------------------------------------------------- "But the day wasn't all smiles for the Magicians. Minot High suffered a tough loss on Friday in the semifinals when referee Mike Nider robbed 145-pounder Jon Nesheim of a spot in the finals. Nesheim led Bismarck St. Mary's wrestler Kyle Engelhardt by score of 3-1 with under 20 seconds remaining in the third period of their match. Nesheim was then hit with a stalling penalty cutting his lead to just one point at 3-2. Then, with just three seconds remaining in the match, Nider hit Nesheim with another quick stalling penalty, forcing overtime. Engelhardt went on to win the match 5-3 in double overtime.
"I thought the referee took the match out of Jon's hands," Krebs said. "I though we did a good job in the match. I can tell Jon he won it, but the score didn't show it." ---------------------------------------------------------------------
Did anyone else see the second stalling call? Sadly for me, a fan of another match stood up in front of me and I missed it. Was it an obvious stall?
Secondly, did Minot Daily News really need to point out the name of the referee involved and say he blatantly "robbed" Nesheim? That, in my opinion, was ignorant of MDN.
What's done is done, I guess. Any thoughts?

Yes... it would have been easy to not make a stall call with time running out. What a lot of people don't realize is that near the end of the match I was talking to both wrestlers warning them not to back up... go forward or circle.... his coaches were yelling it too.... With less 20 ticks left, he backed off the mat, no attempt to even circle and stay on. We went back to the center with 8 ticks left... I told him not to back, I blew the whistle and he did the same thing again!!! He left me NO OTHER CHOICE! He is the one who lost it for himself.... I didn't take anything away from him. By not listening to me (or his coaches) he beat himself!!! The call I did maybe miss was a flagrant misconduct instead of a unsportmanship penalty for yelling the big "F" word and chucking his headgear. I could have had him booted from the entire tournament and Minot would have lost all his points entirely. I am extremely disappointed in the Minot Newpaper and in what Gene Krebs was quoted in saying too. Believe me... if the situation were reversed and it was his kid who was behind... he would have wanted the stall call too. Trouble is this... as a referee we have to try and watch every match in black and white.... coaches and fans watch it in color... Gene and his coaching staff watch it in Maroon and Gold, thats all they see. I want to thank Dave Carlsrud for backing me. I also want to thank Gail Schmitkuntz (former Minot Ramstad coach), Ernie Devlin (Minot Memorial coach) and his family, and a number of other Minot people that came up to me and said I did make the "right" call. If the situation were to happen again I would do exactly the same thing!!!!!!

So Minot lost 3 or 4 team points this last weekend and a coach was kicked out? Wow, is that a record?

Nider,
If that is you what you wrote is a joke. You did rob Neshiem in the semi's I asked toby schweitzer and he thought it was a bad call. Just not one he would argue. Knowlen and schumacher said the same along with both michealson's and hilzendager. every person out there that saw the match thought this was atrocious. you are a disgrace to the referee's of this state. the stalling with 18 seconds left is okay but then the match is restarted and neshiem takes a shot and is defended then kyle takes a re-shot and jon defends and then is hit with the stall call. after that neshiem takes 10-15 shots in o.t. while englehardt takes 0 and there is no call. you are a digusting and arrogant human being if you are unwilling to own up to the fact that you made a mistake.
As for gene he never said the ref's name to the paper. the reporter did some digging and got that on his own. Why shouldn't his name have been printed?? Our referee's should be held accountable for their mistakes. On this forum there are threads that are flaming good hard working wrestlers and one starts about bad refs and is immediately locked that is b.s. If a person can never tell the refs they are making mistakes without the ref's getting all high and mighty how are the referee's going to improve.
the biggest mistake in life is thinking that you have made none

Just to set the record straight--the only part of the Neshiem/Engelhardt match I saw was the OT. I was coaching Kyle Mahlum's semi match with Tony Batesole. I'm not sure why I was quoted as saying it was a "bad call". I didn't see it. I did ask one or two people what happened. I doubt Jeff even saw the end of their regulation, either. Kyle just finished an amazing comeback in the 3rd period and subsequent OT, so our attention was elsewhere--not on the other semi match.

i was sitting about 3 seats up from the mat that the match was on and i watched the entire match from whistle to whistle. ever since last year i have been a fan of nesheim, he is a physical speciman and a superb athlete! he has always impressed me whenever i watch him but i agree with the stalling call 100% it was pretty obvious he was stalling!

Whatever anyone thinks about the call, it is over. Reffing wrestling is one of the hardest things to do. It is one of the few sports where the action does not stop to make a call. If one is to criticize, then grab a whistle and join the ranks of the official. I have made calls in the past that I regret and ones that I feel are right. In some situations, it seems, that nobody is right.

I watched the whole match and for the first, second and most of the third period Jon was the aggressor. He shot about 10 times in the second while Kyle was backing up but he didnt even get a warning until there was around 20 seconds left in the 2nd. I think the ref should call the match the same way all the way through the match. It doesnt matter what the score is, or what point in the match it is at. Those are just my feelings.

The stalling call was bull s**t. The first call was allright. But calling the second calling on him was s**t. The ref did lose the match for him with his pathetic ref job. I'm not sure what everyone else thinks but that was the worst reffing I have seen in along time.
