I'd like to publically acknowledge what I think might just be the most amazing accomplishment I will ever witness in my coaching career. Kyle Mahlum's achievement of wrestling six matches enroute to Bismarck's dual meet championship and his own individual state title is just simply unbelievable! After major shoulder surgery only two months ago, it wasn't even clear if he could make an attempt to rejoin our team. Because of his heart, guts and character, he has now achieved a goal he's worked towards for several years. This effort was truly an inspiration for all of us close to Kyle. Thanks Kyle.

Kyle Mahlum winning a state championship is and amazing feat in itself but to have only wrestled 5 times be for the tournament and having surgery and also being drawn in against the 1st seed Brandon Kok my goodness son you were GREAT!

I'm from class B town and I usually don't watch class A much at the state tourney but when Mahlum beat Kok his match was right in front of me so I watched him the rest of the tournament and it made the whole tourney for me. Congrats to Kyle, It was awesome to watch.

I agree with Bluegolg74. Kyle is a class act and I congratulate him. It is too bad that Brandon Kok could not have met him later in the tournament because he is also a class act who worked as hard as anyone to get to where he is as a wrestler. Great job both of you!

Great Season to both of the wrestlers; Kyle & Brandon I am very close to the Mahlum family and could have not been happier for them. Kyle has worked very hard in all the sports he has been involved with, and very successful also. Kyle has been injured for almost 2 years, so this makes the long, hard, trip back worth it. My heart really goes out to Brandon Kok and his family. They are very nice, classy people I have gotten to know the past 6-7 years. My heart about dropped when he got beat, but I was elated for Kyle. Great careers for 2 top kids!!!

I agree Kyle you are a GREAT YOUNG MAN, I will never forget you. Your inspiration, leadership & work ethic will be greatly missed. I also think Brandon Kok and Mr Engelhardt from St.Marys are both fantastic human beings and wrestlers.
ps- Mahlum you owe me two pops! LOL LOL LMAO

Did anyone see the kok/mehring(fargo south) match? I'm friends with brandon and everything, but grant is my teammate and i think the official on that mat was favoring Kok because he was the #1 seed....Grant should have had back points for sure one time, maybe one more. Kok already had a stalling point and he stalled the last 45 seconds of the 3rd period. And the worst call that we saw, was when Mehring got the takedown in overtime, gave up because he clearly had it but the ref hadn't blown his whistle and Brandon grabbed his ankle and spun behind. I've never had any problems with a ref, but our team's section and parent's section were outraged. I believe Grant was the #7 seed and he should have beaten the #1 seed out of the tournament. Like i said, Brandon is a friend of mine, but Grant should have come out on top. Theres nothing anyone can do now, we can watch the video over and over again but Mehring wrestled like a state champ in that match, i hope someone else was watching that match and can tell me what they saw.

Going back to the original topic of this post. Kyle, I have watched you wrestle since you were in the 7th grade and I have always been impressed with how you carry yourself on and off the mat. The way you wrestled in the state tournament just put an exclamation point on your career. I am not sure if I can ever remember someone who showed more poise, determination and guts after all you have been through. It has been a pleasure watching you. Congratulations on your well-deserved state title.
