I think one of the biggest upsets would have to be James Coveington Getting beat out. He was the state champion this year. He had an ok season. It almost looked as if he only sometimes tried. I didn't get a chance to see his match in state, but I have watched him wrestle plenty of times and he has been complete oppisites. I also believe it hurts him that of all the contiversy that is brought to him gets the officals against him. Another upset was Melmer over Stoctart. Ryan had beatin him everytime they dualed this year if i am not mistaken. I know both a superb wrestlers. They both dominated lil John Basting. And he took 4th. So they are untouchable together. Just hearing that melmer wnn brought a smile to my face being that he is a Senior this year. Nice to see him end on a win. I hope he has as much success in college as he did in high school.

I agree a huge upset was James Covington's match but Covinton doesnt deserve to go to the championship match, he stalls all his matchs that was the reason he beat seblius at edc, the but another upset was at 103 in the semi-finals nyvold over noel, noel is better than nyvold, but he just went out there and thought he would win and did not give it his all

"BEST" match have a different meaning to a lot of people, but I think the "most telling" match was the Class A 125 pound Championship match between Lang and Halvorson. It showed that no one in that weight class, not even the #2 seed, is even close to Lang in his ability, drive, or desire. When you can pin and tech your way to the finals, and then defeat your opponent by dropping him and cutting him to the tune of 25 to 10, you are in a class by yourself. No wonder they did not meet in the dual in Dickinson, the West Region, or the Team Dual Championships.

I think that one of the biggest surprises of the touny was Kyle McCleary. He beat Mitch Greenwood in the semi's then went on to beat Nick Crocker in the finals. He truely wrestled to his ability this weekend. Congrats Kyle.

Goobz:
You should probably go take a look at the post under '275 Class B'. Not many people in the arena thought that it was an upset--most people there thought that Crocker lost the match because of the questionable call at the end of regulation time--when McLeary got awarded a takedown...and wasn't even touching Crocker! I thought you have to have control to be awarded a takedown...or at least touching?

I was not sure about the takedown either until I saw the news saturday night and the footage was obvious it was a takedown. So if you did not see the news coverage, trust me this thread needs to end because it definitely was a takedown.

I can see why people did not think it was a takedown, but personally I thought it was. From my seat right next to the scorers table, here is the way I saw it. BlueBetty was right when she said McCleary was not touching Crocker when Crocker went to the floor and started rolling toward the edge of the mat. However, McCleary went right after Crocker when he was down and jumped on top of him while keeping himself in bounds. Tough call, but I do think it was the right one.

Thanks Fordville & Wraslinfan, I'll retract what I said then in the other post about it not being a takedown. I haven't seen footage other than what I saw live, maybe it just happened so fast that I missed him jumping on top?
Either way, great match and both are champions in my book.

I really think that the top three heavyweights in class B were pretty even, and if they all three were to wrestle each other ten times(highly unlikely scenario), that each would end up at 5-5. Best matches would have to include Wallace and Glasser at 119, Crocker and McCleary at Hwt., and I also enjoyed Englehardt and Holinka's match in the dual between Bismarck and Dickinson. I'm split on the duals between the 2 class B semifinal match-ups. Both came down to the final weight class, with Carrington and Napoleon coming out on top. And on top of it, the scores were both real low-each team stayed in the 20's, showing that kids were fighting hard to stay off their backs and wrestle extremely tough.

Fronthead:
I agree with you. The close ones are many times the most exciting. If there is to be given a "most improved wrestler" award on the Bismarck team - it would certainly go to Scotty Glasser. He came from 103 pounds to 119 pounds, which is a tough transition. He wrestled young men several years his senior all year long and I watched with delight as he made the tough transition work for himself. I think that a large part of his improvement is due to the fact that he drills every day with TJ Sailer. It has been my experience that when you find and outstanding athlete in a weight class that you will also find another one at the weight class immediately above or below him. These are shining examples of what two people working together can accomplish.
Other Champions - go back to the wrestling room in your mind and find those who have helped you to succeed and tell them thank you for helping make me a better wrestler. As one of the Bismarck wrestlers pointed out at the get-together after State - The successful wrestling programs become families and people who they will never forget.

Best Matches: Class A 119 finals - Glasser vs Wallace Great finals matchup - OT win for Glasser - Very evenly matched - Wallace class guy, great sport 125 finals - Lang vs Halvorson Statement made - (12 takedowns) 130 finals - Stockert vs Mellmer - good rematch - if Mellmer does not get the bear hug to his back, could have been closer. still, Mellmer one of ND best (ever) 145 - 1st round - Mahlum vs Kok Guts to Glory - Mahlum had it all this weekend. I was sad for Kok at the same time. 152 - Stavin vs. Sundby - semi finals Great - Great rematch - they left it out on the mat ;D

I think the 119 final in Class A was one of the most exciting of the evening. Glasser just kept chipping away and earned the victory in overtime. What poise and only a FRESHMAN!!!
