I am the parent of an 8th grader who loves Wrestling. Currently his middle school offers a Wrestling program but next year he will start High School at a small K-12 school that does not have Wrestling, only B-Ball. Does anyone have suggestions on what is required and how to start a program in North Dakota? Any suggestions and or options would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I know that your son can co-op with one of the high schools that has a program. If you live north of Divide Avenue he would wrestle at Century and if you live south of Divide he would wrestle at BHS. You would also need to contact Jim Haussler, the Activities Director of the Bismarck Public Schools and tell him of your plans. Hope everything goes ok.

Thanks Blair, I guess I should have mentioned that I live close to Minot. I am assuming that the same holds true here.

It should. I know when I was in high school we had a wrestler that lived in a small town about thirty miles away and he was able to wrestle with us. I think some paperwork was involved but it shouldn't be a big deal. I am not sure on the policy whether he would have to wrestle for Minot High or if he could wrestle for Bishop Ryan.

Blair, Blair, Blair.
#1 Kurt said "Next year he will start high school at a small k-12 school that does not have wrestling...What is required and how to start a program".
Last time I checked Bismarck & Century High Schools already have programs and they are not small.
#2 What if the small town does not have a Divide Avenue? Maybe other towns dont want your "Divide" problems! What whould Jim Haussler have to say about this small towns activities program?
#3 Your school system must have lots of money to pay you to run the internet system!

Dear Pay Attention,
Maybe it is you that needs to "pay attention." I guess on my first post that I assumed the person talked about was living in Bismarck due to the fact that the majority of posts on this site are from Bismarck residents. Kurt cleared up that issue by saying he lived near Minot. My next post informed him that he should contact Minot High or Bishop Ryan. Next time read the whole post or keep your mouth shut. At least I was trying to help someone.

Whoa there guys, I didn't mean to cause a problem. It was my fault for not being clear for Blair. I am new to the state and don't know alot about ND wrestling. I do know that any information I can get about allowing my son to wrestle is greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

I think "pay attention" is being a bit tough on Blair. I believe the post from Kurt was asking for help and Blair gave him this information. If "pay attention" wanted to help Kurt Smith out maybe he should give him some information on how to get his boy wrestling. Very negative "pay attention". I think Kurt will have alot of luck calling the school system in Minot for help, I don't think you will have much problem getting your son to wrestle in Minot, except you will have some paper work to fill out. Other wise you might want to talk to your own school system and other parents in your area to see if they have any interest in starting a wrestling program. Also some of your area coaches may be able put you in-touch with the some of there athletic directors for some direction (Scott Knowlen, Gene Krebs, etc. The North Dakota Athletic Ass. would be another place to look for help. Good luck to you Kurt, hope I gave you some direction.

Mr. Kurt Smith, Welcome to North Dakota. I hope you enjoy your stay with us and find ND wrestling to be an excellent fit for your son. Please do not hold some of the comments on this board against us as a state. SOME people are either too emotionally attached or just plain stupid. I will trust you can figure out who is who based on their posts. You might be able to find some information out about starting a wrestling program from a man who recently started a program in Des Lacs & Burlington. The two towns are south of Minot in Ward county. I believe his name in Bucky Anderson? Maybe some of the intelligent people who love wrestling in this state know his name and will be happy to share it with you. Good luck with your endeavor. Worst case, Minot & Bishop Ryan both have excellent coaches and kids.

Kurt,
Howard "Bucky" Anderson and his wife Linda have been associated with ND Wrestling for many years. Both were inducted into the ND Wrestling Hall of Fame last year. They are great people and have made huge contributions to ND Wrestling. Bucky started wrestling @ DLB and has coached in both the class A and B ranks. I think he is the only coach to win both the A & B Coach of the Year Honors. They live in Minot, I believe, and the last phone # I had for them was 701-852-4138.

His real name is Howard Anderson. It might be in the Minot phone book.
