I was just wondering who you all think has been the best class A coach in the past decade??? Or maybe not the best but really close. My vote goes to Swegarden from Beulah.

If you look at the last decade, I feel you would have to give the honor to the 2 co-head coaches from Bismarck High School. In the past 10years this is what they accomplished: 5 - 1st place finishes 3 - 2nd place finishes 3 - 3rd place finishes 3 time dual 1st place finishes 28 - state champions 9 - school records have fallen within the past 10 years And in conclusion I don't feel this program will weaken in the near future, there is alot of great talent in the wrestling room, and as I have said before, behind every great athlete, stands great coaches. This is one area that BHS has always had.

I would have to agree with luv2pin when you ask about the best coaches in class A in the last ten years. Consistency has to be a huge factor. I can't ever remember a BHS team finishing lower than third in our state tournament. That is an impressive fact. Don't get me wrong, Jay Swegarden did an awesome job with Beulah even when he was battling cancer, but the BHS staff prepares their kids like no one else I have seen.

Yes the coaches at BHS deserve the credit for most accomplishments, and I know they love this sport very much. But the people who new Jay had never seen such a love and dedication towards his wrestlers. Jay would do anything and everything to help a kid accel at wrestling. Jay will always hold a special spot in my heart, he's the one that got me involved in wrestling in the 2nd grade and I feel it hadnt been for him my years of wrestling wouldnt be.

Oldtimer, I agree with what you say about Coach Swegarden. My father used to coach him and he always said what a dedicated person he was. Jay was a special person to the sport of wrestling and the communities in which he worked.

HOW CAN YOU FORGET CENTURY HIGH SCHOOLS PROGRAM. THREE STATE CHAMPIONSHIPS - 4 MR. WRESTLERS OF NORTH DAKOTA, NO OTHER TEAM IN THE STATE IS EVEN CLOSE- RANKED 2ND IN THE NATION IN 1995 WITHOUT A LOSS AND GIVING BHS THEIR ONLY LOSS IN TOURNAMENTS WHEN THEY WERE RANKED ONE! MORE WRESTLERS THAN ANY SCHOOL IN LAST TEN YEARS TO GO ONTO COLLEGE AND BECOME ALL-AMERICANS. ALL THESE ACCOMPLISHMENTS BASICALLY DONE WITH ALL OF BHS'S LEFT OVER THAT THEY DON'T RECRUIT.

I agree with you that Willie McCollum and Ken Gabriel put together some fantastic wrestling teams. But the thread said the best coach in the past ten years and with the consistency that BHS has had in the last ten years I have to stick with their program. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of fantastic coaches out there, I just feel that the Demon program has been the most consistent in being at the top.

I have to back up Blairs comment. the thread started by Old Timer asked for the best Coach within the past 10 years!!! I felt that using that stat and that stat only, BHS coaching staff would have to get the first place vote, at least my vote regarding the situation. Century has always had a respectable program and at many times not only the best program in the state and 1 of the best in the nation. I am not sure what the comment: "BHS's leftovers that they dont recruit", is all about!!! Kids make decisions to either wrestle or further their education at whatever school they decide on, without pressure or threats upon themselves. That type of comment, I feel is not only negative to the sport, to a program, and makes the ie. leftovers, feel just that. Any wrestler, no matter what school he or she is wrestling at, receives my respect. It takes a big person to strap on the headgear and give themselves to the sport. Thank the kids for coming out no matter what school they are at, and hug them no matter if they win or loose. In the end, the sport will help them all to be winners. Keith Lang (proud father & fan)

Scott Knowlen has put up some huge numbers and has alot support in the last 10 years. I don't know if he is the best class A coach in the State. I guess Bismark as a club and town that have put together a tradition that would be hard to beat in any state. Picking the best coach in the state for the past 10 years would be a very hard thing to do if you were only to go by record. Alot of coaches do not have the tradition or the amount of atheletes that other schools have, nor do they have the school support. I don't think I could pick the best coach in the State, because there are so many great ones and some of the greatest havent been around for ten years. I think Lynn Forde has done an outstanding job, at Fargo South, Bruce Moe at Red River shure has turned thing around. Jay Swegarden, Gene Krebs, the Michelsons, were do I stop. These coaches have all done alot for ND wrestling.

I truely felt that this year the coach of the year honors were given to the appropiate people. Coach Michaelson has built up Dickinson to the point where they were contending for the title in both the duals and the individuals, and had his guys ready to wrestle every day. Mark Pazdernik is also a very deserving coach to reach the dual finals with a team that most would agree is a better tournament team. He does a tremendous job of getting his guys motivated and teaching them mat skills. Look out for this team next year, as they only lose 1 state qualifier(although his name is Joe Irmen).
